After finishing my fifth book of this year (I’m terribly behind on my Goodreads quota for this year), I needed a new read. I made it a goal for this year to read more fiction. With that in mind, finding the right book for me, let alone a fiction one, requires a strong vetting process: good Goodreads reviews (above a 4), a connection to the literature, and a good writing style and story. After 45 minutes of perusing Books Inc.’s fiction section, I came across Skinship by Yoon Choi as it’s description of Korean-American short stories piqued my interest.
After reading more about Yoon’s background (she’s pretty well accomplished) and reading some of the book, I decided to buy it. The books’ short stories range from “A long-married couple is forced to confront their friend's painful past when a church revival comes to a nearby town ... A woman in an arranged marriage struggles to connect with the son she hid from her husband for years ... A well-meaning sister unwittingly reunites an abuser with his victims.” I am currently enjoying the range of topics about Asian-Americans of all ages going through human struggles. Check it out if you’re into Asian-American literature or short stories.
